Canton Zug

· Mueller Stöckli Treuhand AG

The most tax-efficient canton in Switzerland

Corporate tax in Zug is calculated by applying three separate rates — federal, cantonal, and municipal — to the company's taxable profit. The combined effective rate in Zug city is approximately 11.85%, one of the lowest in Europe. Federal corporate income tax is levied at 8.5% on profit after tax, which equates to an effective rate of approximately 7.83%. The cantonal and municipal portion adds roughly 4.02% for companies based in the city of Zug. A minimum cantonal tax applies regardless of profit.

A low headline rate means little without expert advisory — incorrect filings, missed deductions, or transfer pricing errors can cost multiples of our fee.

Zug Corporate Tax Rates

Tax type Effective Rate
Federal corporate income tax ~7.83%
Cantonal & municipal (Zug city) ~4.02%
Combined effective rate — Zug ~11.85%
Combined effective rate — Zurich (comparison) ~19%
Combined effective rate — Geneva (comparison) ~14%

These rates apply to ordinary profit. Capital gains on qualifying participations (Beteiligungsabzug) are partially exempt. Minimum cantonal tax is levied on equity and paid-in capital, not on profit, meaning it applies even in a loss year.

Pillar Two / Global Minimum Tax

From 1 January 2024, Switzerland introduced a 15% supplementary top-up tax (Ergänzungssteuer) for multinational enterprise groups with consolidated global revenue of EUR 750 million or more. This is Switzerland's implementation of the OECD Pillar Two framework (GloBE rules). The Swiss top-up tax is collected at federal level and distributed to cantons and municipalities.

For SMEs below the EUR 750 million threshold, standard Zug cantonal rates apply unchanged. Pillar Two does not affect the vast majority of companies registered in Zug.

For qualifying MNE groups, we advise on GloBE income calculations, top-up tax quantification, QDMTT elections, and reporting obligations to the Swiss Federal Tax Administration (ESTV).

Personal Income Tax in Zug

Zug offers some of the most attractive personal income tax rates in Switzerland. The combined rate (federal + cantonal + municipal) for high earners is significantly below the Swiss average, making Zug a preferred domicile for directors, shareholders, and internationally mobile professionals.

Key features of personal taxation in Zug:

  • Lump-sum taxation (Pauschalbesteuerung): Available to foreign nationals who are resident in Switzerland but not gainfully employed here. Tax is assessed on five times annual rental costs or a statutory minimum, rather than actual income.
  • Wealth tax: Canton Zug levies wealth tax on net assets at cantonal and municipal level. The rate is among the lowest in Switzerland.
  • Dividend taxation: Dividends from qualifying participations (10%+ shareholding) benefit from partial taxation at both federal and cantonal levels — reducing the effective rate on distributed profits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the corporate tax rate in Zug, Switzerland?

The effective combined corporate tax rate in Zug (federal + cantonal + municipal) is approximately 11.85% — one of the lowest in Switzerland and Europe. This applies to ordinary profit. A minimum cantonal tax also applies regardless of profit level.

Do I need to file a Swiss tax return as a foreign-owned company?

Yes. Every Swiss-registered company must file an annual corporate tax return with the cantonal tax authority. In Zug this is the Steuerverwaltung Zug. The standard deadline is 31 March of the following year, with extensions available on request. Non-filing leads to a default assessment, typically unfavourable to the taxpayer.

What is withholding tax (Verrechnungssteuer) in Switzerland?

Switzerland levies 35% withholding tax (Verrechnungssteuer) on dividends, certain interest payments, and lottery winnings. Swiss resident recipients can reclaim it in full through their personal tax return. Foreign recipients can recover part or all of it under applicable double taxation treaties — Switzerland has over 100 DTAs in force. Treaty reclaims are filed with the ESTV and must be submitted within three years.
